Happy 2023 Identity Management Day!
It’s the third year of this event, created to raise awareness about the importance of protecting your digital identity!
Did you know, according to a report by the Identity Defined Security Alliance, while 95% of web agency respondents believe ID management to be really important, only 38% of them have actually implemented an identity management solution [1]?
With the risk of our personal information being stolen or shared with third parties without our permission at a peak, ID management is not just important, it has now become a necessity.
The Risks of Not Protecting Online Identity
According to a report by Statista, approximately 15 million records were exposed in data breaches worldwide during the third quarter of 2022. [2] These breaches can lead to financial loss, reputational damage, and even physical harm.
Identity management is fraught with danger due to online attacks, particularly credential stuffing. When hackers obtain weak login credentials or accounts with insecure Web2 software, they can exploit vulnerabilities to gain unauthorized access to personal information. This can result in data breaches with far-reaching consequences. In addition, attackers can use stolen identities to commit fraud, such as applying for loans or opening false bank accounts.
Another risk is the misuse of personal data by third parties. Even if companies have legitimate reasons for collecting data, they may not always use it in ethical or transparent ways. Data brokers and other third-party vendors can also use personal information to target individuals with unwanted ads or sell it to other companies for profit.
The Importance of Identity Management
To ensure that businesses have a legal basis for processing personal data, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) was enacted. For advertising purposes, companies require users to give their consent or "opt-in" to the use of personal data. Unfortunately, some companies still share your data with third parties without our explicit consent, which is against the law.
Google and Meta (formerly Facebook) are two of the world's largest tech companies, and they have been scrutinized for their data handling practices under GDPR. Both companies have been investigated by various EU data protection authorities.
Google was fined 150 million euros in January 2022 by the French data protection authority, CNIL, for violating GDPR rules on advertising personalization. The CNIL found that Google's advertising system did not provide enough transparency or user control over the use of personal data for advertising purposes. [3]
Meta has also faced multiple GDPR investigations and fines. The Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC) fined Meta over $400 million in January 2023 for violating GDPR rules on data protection and user rights. The DPC determined that Meta did not adequately protect user data, including sensitive personal information, from unauthorized access by third parties. [4]
